Cynthia L. Sims, Esq. is Of Counsel to The Coppola Firm. She grew up in the Midwest, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Indiana University, and has embraced New York as her home since 1990. She received a Master’s Degree in Applied Economics from Buffalo State College; her J.D., cum laude, was awarded by the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
After serving as a volunteer law student clerk for the Honorable William M. Skretny, Ms. Sims practiced with two Buffalo law firms. Her practice focused on commercial litigation and banking law, where she was recognized for her advanced abilities with a solid foundation in finance, economics, and high-end analytics. She secured favorable results for a multinational bank in State and federal litigation matters regarding OCC and FINRA regulations. Ms. Sims was part of a team that established a taking claim against the State of New York based on the impact of State legislation on local businesses. She also was instrumental in obtaining a favorable settlement in a complex, high-value claim involving engineering design professional liability.
Before embarking on her legal career, Ms. Sims had spent a number of years in the financial industry, both in New York City and in Buffalo, and served as a business consultant for strategic review and analysis. After years of commercial litigation practice, Ms. Sims moved to the related field of banking regulatory compliance and audit, where she set up compliance programs for newly-enacted regulations and also audited, for a global bank, complex regulatory programs. Her experience gives her a unique understanding of and familiarity with the realities of business and risk management, both of which inform a practical approach to business law and regulation, and she is delighted to have returned to the practice of law.
Ms. Sims assists clients of The Coppola Firm by providing labor and employment counsel, including support for and drafting of proactive compliance-related policies, legal research, and drafting in connection with employment and labor disputes. She is experienced in all phases of commercial litigation case management and also creates litigation avoidance strategies for clients.
Ms. Sims is admitted to practice in New York State courts and in the District Courts for the Western, Northern, Eastern, and Southern Districts of New York, as well as in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. She is a member of the Erie County Bar Association.
